Unlike the metal license plate with the registration number permanently stamped on it. The electronic license plate is a smart device. Similar to other IoT devices, it transmits information back and forth an external server. This transmission process uses the wireless communication channel. In order to send and receive information over the air, the electronic license plate is connected to one of the major cellular networks. This allows it to be connected to the nearest cellular radio towers the same way a cell phone does.
Since a vehicle which is attached with the electronic license plate is constantly moving, the electronic license plate uses geolocation information to identify its current location. This is possible because the electronic license plate is embedded with a smart chip. The smart chip communicates information with an external server using the cellular network as the communication channel. One of the advantages of this feature to a user is the ability to pinpoint the exact location of a stolen vehicle in real-time or to guide emergency responders in the event of an accident.
